The Global South House is Coming to COP30

This year in Bélem, a new space will host conversations about shifting power in climate finance

This year, during COP30 in Belém do Pará, Brazil, a new presence will make itself felt.

The Global South House is a physical venue, located in the heart of COP30, to center conversations about shifting power. Co-created by Alianza Socioambiental Fondos del Sur and Rede Comuá, with the partnership of the Amazon Community Funds Network and the #ShiftThePower movement, it’s meant to make a statement: that the future of just and effective financing – climate and otherwise – begins outside the Global North.

I've been excited to watch the vision for this space take shape, from a concept to a beating heart in the center of Belém – led by Juliana Tinoco, Executive Coordinator of Alianza and the mind behind the house. Check out this video to get a sense of what they're going for.

The idea is not to build something new from scratch, but to reveal and strengthen what already exists: diverse, grounded mechanisms that channel trust and resources toward grassroots climate actors. Tinoco told me that she hopes COP30 can serve as a platform to amplify Global Majority leadership: "The most effective and innovative responses to the climate crisis are already being built within the territories of the Global South.”

If you're in Brazil this week, or following along online, you can track the agenda of the Global South House here – events will be held in-person at Canto Coworking in Bélem, and also livestreamed here in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.

The Alianza team also shared a larger curated list of events at COP30 hosted by their members, at the house and beyond. You can find that list below.
